It was a great week for jockey Edwin Escobedo and trainer Joe Davis at Remington Park and it just got that much sweeter Sunday. They joined forces again to win the featured allowance race with Axle D.
On Saturday night, that jockey-trainer combo won the Grade 2, $56,160 Eastex Stakes together with Relentless Coronado, nearly the longest-priced horse in a short field of five. She went off at 6-1 odds, but it didn’t matter as the 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred won by a half-length.
On Sunday, Escobedo broke on top with Axle D and won as the 7-2 third wagering favorite in the 300-yard allowance race for non-winners of three lifetime races. It was the second win in a row for the 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Uncle D, out of the Mr Jess Perry, Transaxle. Axle D had won Jan. 17, 2025 at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City in a non-winners of two career race allowance.
Axle D finished a full length ahead of 9-5 betting favorite Mistakin Identity on Sunday afternoon, who was another head in front of third-place finisher Clareets Boy (3-1). The winner covered the distance in :15.410 for a speed-index of 93 over the fast track. Axle D paid $9.40 to win, $4.20 to place and $2.80 to show.
Carol S. Smith bred the winner in Oklahoma and owner Ky Luddington of Freedom, Okla., purchased the gelding for $40,000 at the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale in 2023. Axle D earned $18,165 from the $33,180 allowance purse and improved lifetime to nine starts, three wins and one third for a total bankroll of $46,272. This winner for Escobedo gave him eight winners for the meet, tied with Francisco Calderon, who won twice Sunday. They are three wins ahead of three jockeys tied for third with five victories each – Mario Delgado, Ali Rivera (two wins Sunday), and David Alvarez, Jr.
The top five in the trainers’ race after two weeks of racing is two-time defending champion conditioner Dee Keener with 10 wins, followed by Marc Jungers (5 wins) and three trainers tied for third – Trey Wood, Matt Whitekiller and Cristian Alcala (4 wins).
The top five owners are 918 Bloodstock (J.V. Ross, D.V.M.) with five wins from 10 starters. That group is followed by Bryan Hawk and Alcala Ranch with three apiece, and Larry L. Rice and Bobbie Rice tied for third with Mi Serenity at two victories each.
